Jupiter - Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, and Bryce Dessner
Vivid Music Festival
My friend Caitlin and I went to a concert at the Sydney Opera House last night and it was fantastic. The Opera House has a festival going on now so the Harbour was all light up with awesome projections on a lot of the buildings and cool light up things everywhere. The projection show on the Opera House roof was incredible and really impressive.
The concert we saw started with the Orava String Quartet (whose 4 members were all not much older than myself) played 3 songs, one by Sufjan Stevens, one by Nico Muhly, and one by Bryce Dessner. Nico’s stuff was a bit out there for me but Sufjan’s composition called Run Rabbit Run in three movements was fantastic and the quartet did a great job with it. After they played Sufjan, Nico, and Bryce joined them onstage along with a drummer and 7 trombones (cause I mean why have like 2 or 3 when you can have 7). They played 10 pieces in a series they composed call Planetarium and all the songs were wonderful and really interesting. They mixed the classical sounds of the quartet with electric guitar, piano and then Sufjan sang and used a lot of synth. Sufjan also told us ‘facts’ about all the planets before each song and he was hilarious.
My favorite part of the night was when they came back on for the encore. Sufjan - “I used to think this song was about space, but now I think it’s about Australia.” (the proceeds to sing Somewhere Over The Rainbow)
“Somewhere over the rainbow skys are blue and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true” I would have to agree with Sufjan on that one. =]
My friend and I got tickets to see all of these amazing people at the Sydney Opera House. I only really know Sufjan Stevens but I made this playlist of all of their music to listen to for the next 2 months. Bryce Dessner is the guitarist in a band called The National which is pretty awesome and Nico Muhly is a composer who has written some really beautiful pieces. We got amazing seats for the show, front row of the balcony (this means no one taller than me can sit in front of me and block my view). So excited!
